The Biggest Thing You Can Do for Your School!
Starting a prayer meeting for your school is the biggest single thing you can do for that school. Even if there are only two or three of you who are Christians in your school, get together every week and pray.
When I became a headteacher I discovered something. A small group of Christian staff had been praying for the school each week for two or three years – and in particular they prayed that God would send a Christian headteacher.
And you know, I’d never even heard of that school till a “chance remark” from a government adviser two weeks before the job was advertised. Makes you think, doesn’t it!
Maybe you’re worried that the headteacher wouldn’t let you start a prayer meeting? Well, your time is your own at lunchtime, so he/she can’t stop you. You do need to ask for permission to use a room in the school, even if there’s only 2 of you meeting, but it would be a very strange HT that wouldn’t allow you to use a room.
Now, here’s the real challenge. Don’t do it in secret. Jesus was very keen that we shouldn’t hide our light under a bushel. Put it in the staff announcements each week. Invite people to come. You might be surprised. Ask them to ask you to pray for things. God honours us when we are unashamed of him.
You know what James 5 says: “Elijah was a human being just as we are. He prayed earnestly that it wouldn’t rain, and it didn’t rain on the land for 3 ½ years. Again he prayed, and the heavens poured rain.”
Go for it: praying for your school is the biggest single thing you can do!
