Summer 2026 Reading Recommendations
We know that teachers love to read during the summer holidays and take the chance to get lost in a good book!
This summer, we have again partnered up with the owners of Galilee Books, a small independent Christian bookshop in Glasgow, to give you three recommendations for you to dive into! We also have a bonus recommendation from our past Chair, Megan Patterson, who was keen to share a book she has read recently … so read on!
What has Christianity Ever Done for Scotland – Paul James Griffiths
We live in times when many question the legacy of the Christian faith and the place of the Church in our society. Indeed, many are willing to claim it has been nothing but negative. In this refreshing book, we are shown the positive influence of both the corporate church and individual Christians on many aspects of Scottish life – from education to science, politics to the legal system.
It is an easy and heart stirring read! (and you may be able to share some information with pupils during RMPS/RE lessons!).
Come, You Weary – Michael Reeves
Sometimes we all need a bit of gentle encouragement to just keep going! In this small book – only 64 pages – Michael Reeves presents a beautiful picture of Christ and the standing of Christian believers. A chapter a day for 11 days – only about 5-10 minutes – will refresh the heart and soul.
God’s Great Big Global Church – Tim Challies
If you are looking for an exciting family read during the Summer holidays this will certainly fit the bill! Challies has visited a number of countries in different parts of the world to observe the nature of church life. In this beautifully produced book – full colour throughout – he introduces the country and the church to younger readers.
Children – and parents(!) – will gain enthusiasm for going to church on Sundays as they discover that they and their local fellowship are part of something much bigger: a family of people worshiping God all around the world!

The Language of Rivers and Stars – Seth Lewis

Is there such a thing as ordinary? A magnificent sunset takes my breath away but my morning cereal, my coffee, the daisies in the grass are, well, just ordinary.
He has helped me to look more carefully and listen more intently to what God is saying in all that He has made. Seth writes:
‘Ordinary’ is just another word for the miracles that God decided to repeat. And He repeats them on purpose – the natural world is overflowing all around us with a constant stream of God’s language, with never-ending messages from our Creator.
Seth’s book is a great summer read for all teachers who, every day, are exploring creation to un-hide the Creator.
