Assemblies Online

Assemblies Online links the latest films, music and TV to biblical stories to a wide range of resources for Assembly/Religious Observance. New assembly outlines are published regularly, keeping abreast of latest film releases. The site has separate Primary and Secondary sections. The script and (where appropriate) activities in each outline are written up in a useful amount of detail, but the format is also flexible and easy to customise.

This site will be of particular use to teachers, because of the links to classroom activities. However, chaplains and youth workers who are confident in managing pupil participation will also be able to use these resources to create highly stimulating assemblies.

Each outline makes use of a media clip (generally film, sometimes TV). In some cases, downloadable film clips are provided, but more often the relevant DVD will need to be hired or purchased. For each film, a link to Amazon is provided. Where a film is referenced, clear timings are given for each clip.

An exceptionally wide range of topics is covered: e.g. for Secondary: Community, Protest, Success & Failure, Media, Bullying, Death. For Primary: Identity, Heroes, 21st Century Pressures, Bible Characters, Human Trafficking.

As well as scripted talks, there are downloadable PowerPoints, ideas for preparatory class-based activities, and imaginative opportunities for pupils to participate in each Religious Observance Assembly. All outlines make creative use of the media excerpts, and link them to appropriate Bible passages.

The site is managed by EthosEducation, which offers a wide range of resources – all well worth looking at. References are to Key Stages but can be easily adapted to Curriculum for Excellence. Some of the primary resources can be adapted for Circle Time. The site is large and regularly updated, so repays periodic visits.
