Agar Reading Christian Values in Education, CVE Scotland

Christian Aid: Harvest Assembly Toolkit

A well-produced PowerPoint for RO/Time for Reflection, together with full script and background information.

The PowerPoint uses high quality photography to highlight the case study of an 11 year old Ethiopian girl, Agar, 11. Agar used to rely on firewood and kerosene lamps to do her homework in the evenings. But the dirty fuels filled her house with smoke, which hurt her eyes, so she gave up studying and dropped out of school. An on-the-ground partner of Christian Aid helped Agar’s family gain access to a solar lamp so she can now study safely and work towards her dream of becoming a maths teacher.

The presentation emphasises that we are all global neighbours, who can stand together to transform our world. The back-up notes give suggestions for numerous links into classromm learning: Art, Dance, Drama, Geography, Literacy, Sciences, RME, Social Education etc. There is also a suggestion for a cross-curricular themed day for the whole school.
