Ten Must Know Bible Stories: The Ten Commandments – home learning resources

Are rules good or bad? The story of the Ten Commandments.

As this Coronavirus outbreak progresses we’re all finding it harder to stick to the rules. It’s frustrating to have to stay at home and we are missing our family and friends. We’re sure lots of our children are feeling the same.

In the story of the Ten Commandments God gives his people rules, and they find it hard to stick to them!  We thought by exploring this story it will help children explore their views on rules. Are they good or bad? Why do we have rules? What rules would they make for their community to follow. We hope these resources will also give the children space to consider and process their feelings and frustrations about the current rules we are all having to follow.

We are delighted to provide you with a resource that will help your class explore this story while learning at home. The resource has ideas for early, first and second level. They’re designed for you to pick from a selection of ideas and use them as they are or adapt them to fit your class.

There are 4 sections: Hear the story, Check our understanding, Start thinking and Turn thinking into action.

Here is the resource as a pdf: The Ten Commandments home learning pack but you can also find it on Ten Must Know Stories’ website: https://tenbiblestories.org/are-rules-good-or-bad-learn-at-home-resources-based-on-the-story-of-the-ten-commandments/

Storytelling videos and assembly videos that complement the resources are also posted onto Ten Must Know Bible Stories’ youtube channel.

What’s next? That’s the question we’d all like to know the answer too! Whatever happens next our children are going to be experiencing change and transition. This may be simply the change of being able to go back to school or bigger changes like moving schools or classes. Look out for learn at home resources based on the story of Daniel and the Lions coming soon. Daniel is forced to live in a new place and a new culture. We can explore how despite this change he remembers what is important to him and what he holds on to from his past. The resources will encourage the children to consider their upcoming change and transition and reflect on what is important to them to ‘take forward’.

Extra transition ideas Around this time of year we would usually host ‘Prayer spaces’ in our local schools for our P7 classes around the theme of transition. They have proved hugely popular in providing a place for the children to reflect on their past experiences, considering for example what they are thankful for, who they will remember and what they’re proud of. They also allow children to express their feelings about moving on; what are they excited for, what are they worried about?

We will provide some simple ideas that will be based around these prayer or reflective zones that can be done at home or in an online classroom and hopefully support all children (not just P7s) in their upcoming transitions.
