Science and Faith Conference, Williamwood High School
Glasgow Presbytery organised a conference to enable pupils to investigate the relationship of Science and Faith. Grasping the Nettle and CVE Scotland helped in the planning of the conference. At Williamwood High School on the 6th June, 80 pupils entering S5 and accompanying teachers had two inputs from visiting American astronomer Dr Deborah Haarsma (photo below), watched two video clips from the Introducing the God Question resource and held roundtable discussions.

Animated and mature group discussion was heard with group spokespersons presenting back a diversity of opinions and intelligent questions to Dr Haarsma. Heads of Science, Heads of Chemistry, Biology, Physics and RE were involved in the discussions. They were very enthusiastic to have the opportunity to address this topic of great relevance. Technicians were on hand to assist as necessary. The Q and A session with which the afternoon concluded was redolent with mature and intelligent questions – including a ‘what’s your conclusion?’ – to Deborah Haarsma. By the end of the afternoon at least 50% of the pupils were valuing ‘the God factor’ and one Head of Biology reported that 20 pupils had asked to have opportunities to follow up on the Science and God topic.

Members of Glasgow Presbytery were there, with positive relationships between visitors, staff and pupils. It is hoped that this type of conference will be replicated in other High Schools across Scotland.
