Fix your thoughts on Jesus. Hebrews 3.1
As I write news of the rising death toll in the Sri Lankan bombings of Easter Sunday is coming in.
On seeing the picture of the blood-spattered statue of Jesus my tears can no longer be stemmed. Jesus said: ‘Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me’, Matthew 25.40. Or in the version I learnt as a child: ‘Inasmuch as you have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, you have done it unto me’.
Through my tears I apply His words in Scotland as in Sri Lanka:
In school today I listened patiently as a troubled pupil described his life at home to me. I listened to Jesus.
I wrestled with an alternative method of teaching conjugations to a reluctant learner. I did it for Jesus.
I took coffee and cake to a colleague who consistently avoids me. I took it to Jesus.
I stayed late to decorate the classroom with the children’s artwork. I stayed with Jesus.
When pupils or colleagues mock me for being a Christian, they mock Jesus. When they malign me, they malign Jesus. When they hate me I know they hated Him first. John 15.18
He isn’t ashamed of me. I’ll not be ashamed of Him.
‘Ashamed of Jesus, that dear friend
On whom my hopes of heaven depend.
No, when I blush, be this my shame,
That I no more revere His name’.
