“Year- Group Assembly” lesson plan: Rights and Justice

One innovative approach to Assemblies/Religious Observance/Time for Reflection is to organise the year group into small discussion groups. This facilitates pupil voice/pupil engagement through a much more interactive approach. It also readily integrates RO with topics and themes that one or more classroom subjects are currently using as contexts for learning.
This Year-Group Assembly was delivered by a team of Chaplains – several ministers, a church based Community worker, a Scripture Union schools worker. The brief was to produce an interactive ‘values-based’ event, as part of the Senior Phase Health and Well-Being Programme. The team of Chaplains met together to plan the lesson and then sent the lesson plan to the School’s Depute Head-Teacher for comment a week ahead of the lesson.
Using a mixture of small group discussion and ‘from-the-front’ delivery, this lesson encourages pupils to evaluate definitions of rights and justice and to reflect on Jesus’ words related to rights and justice.
Uses PowerPoint presentation and an extract from the DVD ‘Slumdog Millionaire’.
